The beautiful antique Douglas Fir used in this furniture was salvaged from the historic Officer's Mess at Work Point in Esquimalt, on Vancouver Island. Built in 1890, this heritage landmark was of great significance in Canada’s coastal defence history. Despite having federally “recognized” historical status, the military considered the building to be surplus and sadly, it was “deconstructed” in the summer of 2006.
The salvaged boards were originally used as roofing material. They were acquired in their original state – rough, dirty and full of rusty old nails. We decided to breathe new life into this marvellous old wood and give it the recognition it deserves. The warm amber patina of centuries old Douglas Fir accentuated by blackened nail holes from hand forged, square head nails creates some stunning looking furniture.
Preparing the wood is a very labour intensive project as each board must be cleaned and de-nailed before it can be used. Once the wood is nail free, it is either planed to reveal the gorgeous old growth grain hiding underneath, or it is lightly sanded to retain its rustic characteristics. Each piece is then hand finished with a special, environmentally friendly, oil/wax finish.
Working with this wood is a truly magical experience. From the history behind it, to the beauty within, it’s an honour to have the opportunity to bring this magnificent wood back to life.
